My theories and thoughts on otherkin
Ok... I'll admit it... I've been on and off again accepting/skeptical/wtf about the otherkin stuff in spite of dreaming/seeing wings on me and having some people see them too.

But everything I read rings so many damned bells with me that I seriously can't deny it. And all of the stuff points to something very interesting.

You know how people are magicians, they practice magick? Ok. I think that otherkin ARE magick. I think that their very existence, something in how they came to be born here is magickal. And those who have had "awakenings" basically flipped that switch, opened the damned fobwatch (woo-hoo Doctor Who ref FTW!! ^_^), and "let 'er rip".

So of course psychic shit comes naturally to them, happens to them, and stuffs. Couldn't tell ya about the other manifestations--other than I think we all sorta are tapped into something which resonates with our magickal natures on that level. I think that natural healers, lightworkers, et cetera of COURSE will be angelkin. That makes just too much sense. Angels are messengers/helpers of the divine, right?

My dad once told me he's part fae. I suspect that part of this is genetic or can be genetic. I couldn't say it's ENTIRELY genetic. I mean, I know people who consider themselves to be otherkin but their parents are (omgs please shoot me for using this term but I dunno how else to put it) "muggles".

This whole debate about whether or not otherkin are just people "trying to be special" sorta reminds me of the argument in some places on practicing magick or being mystics. Not all of us walk the same paths everyone else does, and I don't consider any of it good or bad or different or better or worse than anyone else. I think that everyone needs to follow their own True Will--provided that they are responsible in how they do so and that others are free to do the same.

I think that in time... maybe... perhaps... enough of us will evolve to the point where this sorta thing will be more commonplace. I'd truly love to think so. At the very least, I believe that if enough people believe that, it can happen. I think that to do otherwise is to cave in to the Nothing of the Neverending Story, doomed to be swallowed forever in lies and denials of the self.

I don't find it to be an insulting term - it's actually quite polite. It's all in your attitude, I think. ^_^

Some people are simply searching for a way to be special. Others ARE special and are searching for a way to explain themselves. The general key to knowing which is which is how strangers react to them.

And welcome to Shadowlore. B-)
~* Aliael *~starry_wings on July 18th, 2008 12:14 am (UTC)
Thanks! ^_^ I like Shadowlore a lot, actually. A nice mix of people and very friendly.

When I was younger I was moved ahead a grade and placed in the gifted program. There were a few teachers who were rather mean to me and kept telling me that I shouldn't think I'm special, shouldn't put on airs... blah blah blah... I think I had a lot beaten out and into me at that age both in good and bad ways as a result. I was always a nice kid and was always taken aback by how reactive they were towards me. Being an adult I realize that maybe, just maybe, they were envious and lashed out at me.
caermon: Bullshit Metercaermon on July 18th, 2008 12:28 am (UTC)
You're probably right. I had the same problem when I was in school many moons ago. We didn't have a "gifted" program, but I was placed in math and science classes a year ahead of my actual grade. Most teachers were pretty cool as they liked having someone who WANTED to learn, but there were a few who were out to prove that I was nothing special.

And my peers... That's another horror story in itself. Children don't like children who are obviously more talented. It's makes them feel less valuable somehow and they lash out. There were times when school wasn't very much fun for me.

I believe that a lot of otherkin are *awakening* at the moment, of if already awakened coming together as friends (whether online, offline or whatever) and since i dont believe in chance, I reckon there has to be a reason for this.

It's the power of the Internet. People who thought that they were alone are rapidly finding out that they are not.

There is no such thing as chance.

However, it may be a matter of "critical mass" in population density, or of otherkin (perhaps they ran out of human psyche in this reality?), or the existence of the internet, or even just that certain people form nuclei for others to gather and be awakened.

My definiton of otherkin is anyone with a non human soul. Otherkin seem to have more "abilities" merely because we're open to those things more so than non-kin are on the whole. I think there are a lot more otherkin out there than have or ever will awaken to that belief.
~* Aliael *~starry_wings on July 20th, 2008 11:30 pm (UTC)
Non-human soul... *nods* That would fit. I think some of not all of my past lives were non-human. I know that none of any of the "memories" I've had of my future lifetimes were human and what ones that appeared to be were...well, odd.

I like your definiton of otherking because that's how I think of it myself. I notice actual spirits with kin like those of wolves, cats, and other animals tend to be more exclusive and I don't feel any connection to them at all besides my conenction to Mother Nature.

BTW, sorry for inerrupting, but I found the conversation interesting and the company friendly. I'm nto angelkin, but I am a spirit of the air and in that we're near cousins. Anyone who would like to chat and be a friend will be friended back but I must warn you that I tend to write darkly and passionately and it may not be to everyone's taste. This lj screenname is dedicated specifically to spiritual stuff so I feel me typing here really applies. Thank you for your time.

on the subject of magic....
I'm inclined to think that otherkin are not necessarily more magically inclined, as simply they're more open to the concepts and that it CAN work.

My own experience, and a few dragons I know, is that at a certain point of acceptance, things tend to just "happen". Like suddenly skipping a half dozen highway exits because both people in the car are in a hurry to get home, or uploads being confirmed that haven't been made yet.

(the first is not mine; the second IS)

After all, though, once you question your own sense of identity and decide the biology is wrong....is there anything else that is going to NOT be questioned?

You have good points both. But I don't even know of the angelic stereotype--what is it?

And I hear you on the magick part... although this may depend on your definition.

You have a very interesting point here. I'm still in a bit of a struggle with myself, to be honest. I'm not sure I'm ready to accept what I am, whatever that may be. Consider yourself lucky that you even have past memories (LOL). I'm not so lucky. As I stated before on once_winged, my wings (when I can see/feel them) also shift between white and black, but it doesn't seem to be related to mood. But anyway, forgive me for rambling, the idea that Otherkin have flipped some sort of switch in their consciousness is a thought that's crossed my mind before.
~* Aliael *~starry_wings on July 21st, 2008 10:12 am (UTC)
Mine doesn't seem to be related to mood, either--it's only appeared to be random so far cause I can't find a connection.

my $0.02
I have found autonomic writing to be paramount in finding more out about myself (past, present and future)

it has become my own personal ouija board to my soul

handy since I my conscious mind is so skeptical about so much

I talked about my feelings on "genetics" in once_winged

but... as for the other points here.

I completely agree with the "special"... I think the common bond I see in 'kin are that most of us were the "gifted kids" and we are overthinkers. (that is not to say all, but I am seeing that as more and more common among those who are truly seeking the answers and not "picking a role")

so... we have spend our WHOLE LIVES "just trying to be normal"... to "fit in"... and now we find we may be even "weirder" then we could have even THOUGHT!?!?!?!?

Yeah... so... there is a fear of "being special" and that may account for the need/want to help those of human souls ("muggles"... yep... I've had many friends call me "not quite human"... and when this whole Harry Potter thing started... I said "HAH! I'm not "non-human"... I'm just not "muggle"!!!" lol) And... it makes sense... if you put together how much of the "Dictionary of Phrase and Fable" she has taken directly into building her world... you see the centuries of folklore on display... so it's to stand to reason that she would also come up with the best way to make the human souls make sense

And... while I'm here... the new guy tying up space on your journal... your latest entry on "energy"

I, being the skeptic, see all of this related to magnets, energy and electricity... so I also go thru points in time where I feel more "alive" than others... I would say it has to do with the weather (electric storms and such) and the moon... but I haven't gotten to a place of mapping out these feelings in a manner conducive to finding Earthly answers.

The other thing is. I can see in your comments that you are really awakening... and I know everytime I hit a place of learning more about who/what I might be... I tend to "vibrate" more... I call it a "minty" feeling lack of any better way to describe the sensation.

Nice to meet you, BTW... hope I'm not just intruding like this

More than "magickal", it is the nature of the very existence, but just with some spice on it.

I swear I see magick and mundane things as natural as the air we breath. Is the same thing but with different levels of manifestation. For me, both are in the same box (and my parents are mundane, but are aware of this "magickal" stuff and acknowledges it without hesitation - for also they are afraid of it at some degree due to their life's experiences and experiences with me).

Since I come from the old otherkin community, I preffer to say "mundane people" rather than "muggle", because it was the original therm coined within the otherkin community back decades ago. It is possible for the "mundane people" to turn into "otherkin" but clicking that "switch" you say, but also can lock them so their inner nature cannot manifest by itself. Supposadly we are on a century wich is "awaken" from that slumber of old, and that's due to the recent increasing receptiveness of the people nowadays. That's pretty awesome and cool, and relieving (because that means humanity is not spiraling into depravation but into something more "subtle" - agreed the already depraved ones just yell more loud than the others, but that doesn't makes them more numerous).

Hmmm... Nifty topic *pokes topic*
